Sunsnacks Special: Classic Clash - beautifully preserved Lisson Grove cafe

Top find almost opposite the dole office in Lisson Grove where, legend has it, Joe Strummer was first approached by Mick Jones and Paul Simenon to form The Clash.

The exterior sign has been changed in recent years but the red wood exterior is still in good nick. Inside, there are plenty of fine, roomy wooden-backed booths with proper leatherette seating. The check floor is reassuringly scuffed.

A really neat, little arrangement that sits smack in the middle of one of the most deprived areas of central/north London. Somehow it's managed to resist the temptation to funnel in the local dispossessed by re-fitting with heinous orange plastic moulded KFC furnishings. But it can only be a matter of time.

Sunsnacks is well worth seeing; the immediate streets contain a wealth of modern architecture and odd shops (including a perfectly preserved 60s undertakers and a valve-radio shop, side-by-side down the road) and there are two especially good second-hand bookshops only a few hundred feet away. The legendary Lisson Gallery and Alfie's Antique Market are close-by too.

Lots of Clash info - and a street by street recce of their whereabouts during the heyday of punk - here.
