Classic Cafes: Metro W12 #1

Enclaves of the '50s & 60s

Built precariously into a tube station in W12, these snaps record The Metro before it was comprehensively destroyed internally in July 2002. We present it here on a typically, er, 'quiet' day with suicidally grim views out onto the Goldhawk Road, poised sauce bottles and net curtains rotting in the secondhand daylight. Note the old 'Lunches' sign which seems to remain in a few older cafes round the city. Apparently very popular with Japanese hipsters, this has appeared in a recent Tokyo handbook directing tourists to London's cheap-eats hotspots.
