Classic Cafes: Popular Cafe Lever St EC1

Enclaves of the '50s & 60s

The Popular cafe in Lever St, hidden behind Marshall St baths, also doubles as a basic Thai restaurant: neat little plain caff space; Univers typeface over the door (always a good sign); retains old double-doorway - an unusual feature for these parts; classic oval Pepsi sign outside. Somewhat marred externally by grills and gates but when the place opens up, the dark orange formica tables, sumptuous red leatherette seating and fake wood paneling really come into their own. Good use of over-large fork and spoon carvings on the walls too. What a find. The Barbican Grill is also worth a trip in Whitecross St nearby.
